Kris (Amy Seimetz) čelí osudnému okamihu svojho života, keď ju bezvýznamný zlodej chytí a nadroguje neznámou látkou. Popri tom sa však v pozadí začína diať niečo väčšie. Nevedomky sa Kris stáva súčasťou životného cyklu organizmu, ktorý prestupuje mikroskopický svet, prechádza fázami červa, rastliny, živočícha a potom sa začína odznova. Na tejto ceste nájde spriaznenú dušu menom Jeff (Shane Carruth), ktorého tiež ovláda sila, väčšia, než je on sám. Obaja spoločne pátrajú po bezpečnom prístrešku ich tela i duše a popritom sa snažia poskladať chaotické úlomky ich rozbitých životov. Stane sa z ich vlastnej identity nakoniec iba ilúzia?
