Manželé Catherine (Nicole Kidman) a Matthew Parker (Joseph Fiennes) se snaží přizpůsobit životu ve vzdáleném australském pouštním městě Nathgari. Je to příjemná, ale uzavřená rodina. V předvečer velké prachové bouře se jim otřásl život, když jejich dvě děti, Lily a Tom, zmizí do pouště. Do hledání se připojí místní policista David Rae (Hugo Weaving). Brzy se ukáže, že se jim mohlo stát něco hrozného. V hlavní roli je podezření, šíří se zvěsti a domorodé příběhy. Místní se začínají obracet proti páru. S rostoucí teplotou klesá šance na jejich přežití a Catherine s Matthewem se strachují o osudy svých dětí. (gegina31)
