Film sleduje dramatický osud tří kosmonautů, kteří jako první měli absolvovat let a přistání na Marsu. Těsně před startem však dostanou příkaz opustit kosmickou loď. Jsou odvezeni do vzdáleného opuštěného hangáru, kde je jim svěřen úkol. Mají svůj let jen fingovat. Kosmonauté zpočátku odmítají podílet se na ohromném, dopodrobna připraveném podvodu, který má odvrátit hrozbu, že by vláda v případě neúspěchu odmítla dále financovat program kosmických letů. Nakonec však souhlasí a zúčastní se jen předstíraného letu, který je z ateliéru prostřednictvím televizní obrazovky veřejnosti a oficiálním místům předkládán jako skutečný. Až na několik zasvěcenců, nikdo nic netuší. Mladý reportér Caulfield však předjímá pravý stav věcí a hledá důkazy. Prudký zvrat v situaci nastane, když se kosmonauté dozvědí, že se údajně stali obětí katastrofy a že jsou pro své rodiny a pro veřejnost mrtví. Pokusí se o návrat domů, cesta však je příliš dlouhá, nebezpečná a vysilující. (Česká televize)
