Ambra je krásná dívka, jejiž rodiče ji odložili s velkou částkou peněz na výchovu na prahu vesnické usedlosti. Domnívá se, že má na víc, než se usadit na venkově a vdát se. Setkáním se šlechticem Brucem jí dodá odvahy a odjíždí s ním do Londýna. Bruce však musí do Ameriky, a Ambru zanechává v Londýně. Ambře jsou odcizeny všechny peníze, které ji zanechal, a najednou se ocitá v Newgatte – vězení pro dlužníky. Podaří se jí uprchnout a dostane se do londýnského divadla, kde záhy díky své kráse září v hlavních rolích a získává si četné milence. Vdá se za bohatého obchodníka a po jeho smrti je žádoucí vdovou... (marťan)
