Šerif Rooster je zbaven funkce, protože ve službě příliš často sahá po zbrani, ale také po alkoholu. Soudce Parker ho požádá, aby našel a dopravil zpět vůz naložený zbraněmi a výbušninami, kterého se zmocnila banda psanců vedená obávaným Hawkem. Pokud je přivede živé, odznak mu vrátí natrvalo. Rooster spěchá k pevnosti Fort Ruby, ale Hawkův gang ho předešel. Sídlo v indiánské rezervaci přepadl, znásilňoval a zabíjel. Jeho obětí se stalo nejen mnoho mírumilovných Indiánů, ale také místní kněz, reverend Goodnight. Řádění bandy přežila pouze reverendova dcera a indiánský chlapec Vlk. Aby je ochránil, chce je nechat na blízké farmě, ale žena si nedá říct a jede s ním i s Vlkem chytat zločince. Roosterovi se podaří získat jen ukradené zbraně. V noci jsou ale přepadeni bandity...
