Jižní Francie, polovina 16. století. V podhůří Pyrenejí v zapadlé vesnici Artigat dojde k nevídané události: Martin Guerre (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu) tajně opouští svou ženu (Nathalie Baye), syna, rodiče a sourozence. Odchází do světa bez jakéhokoliv slova vysvětlení. Po několika letech do vsi přichází muž, jenž se prohlašuje za Martina Guerra (Gérard Depardieu). Poznává své příbuzné, zná jménem všechny obyvatele vesnice. Guerrovi Martinovi odpouští jeho mladistvou nerozvážnost. Martin se opět vrací k povinnostem rolníka, manžela a otce rodiny. Zdánlivou idylu naruší příchod a tvrzení jakéhosi bývalého vojáka...
Film byl natočen podle scénáře Jeana-Clauda Carrièra, na němž také spolupracovala jako konzultantka přední americká historička Natalie Zemon Davisová. Příběh vznikl na základě soudobých i pozdních (polo)literárních zpracování, které popisují skutečné události historických postav Martina Guerra, Bertrandy de Rols a Arnauda z Tilhu.
