Scott ztvárnil postavu sochaře Thomase Hudsona, jehož dobrovolnou izolaci na Bahamách ukončí dvě události: příjezd jeho synů ... a začátek 2. světové války. Film je emotivní i heroický zároveň: zachycuje zblízka otcovskou lásku i odpor vůči tyranii. Přes Ostrovy uprostřed proudu zaplavila mohutná vlna literární historie.
