Soukromý černošský detektiv hledá unesenou dceru harlemského bosse a zaplete se do boje mezi mafií a černošskými gangstery. V klíčovém akčním snímku Gordona Parkse se Richardu Roundtreemu podařilo vytvořit zcela novou a poctivou hrdinskou postavu Johna Shafta, „chlapa, co se dvakrát nerozmejšlí, když kolem není bezpečno“. John Shaft je černošský soukromý detektiv, který vlastní malou kancelář poblíž Times Square. Na cestě do práce jej jednou zastaví jeho kamarád od policie, poručík Victor Androzzi (Charles Cioffi), a chce po něm informace o jedné větší akci v Harlemu, do které je zapleten král černošského podsvětí Bumpy Jonas (Moses Gunn). Shaft mu nemůže pomoci a odchází, a jen taktak se vyhne dvěma Bumpyho silákům, kteří na něj čekali v kanceláři, přičemž jeden skončil mrtvý na chodníku o asi osm pater níže. Shaft se dostává do rukou policie, která mu vyhrožuje vězením za zabití, a proto kontaktuje Bumpyho. Ten mu sdělí, že jeho mladá dcera, kterou nikdy do své „práce“ nezasvěcoval, byla unesena. Shaft se tedy nakonec bude muset postavit všemocné bělošské mafii a afroamerické gangstery přijmout za dočasné spojence... (oficiální text distributora)
