Měla to být jednoduchá mise. Jenže skončila v pekle čínské občanské války... Čína roku 1926 je zemí rozdrobenou na malé celky, trpící pod nadvládou okolních velmocí. Spojené státy americké zde mají několik vojenských jednotek, jejichž úkolem je v případě potřeby zajistit bezpečí americkým občanům. Tento jednoduchý úkol plní také posádka parního dělového člunu San Pablo. Staré zadýchané lodi ovšem nikdo neřekne jinak než Sand Pebbles (Plážový oblázek). Zde nastoupí do služby šikovný mladý strojník Jake Holman (Steve McQueen). Od začátku tu však naráží na menší či větší potíže. O provoz lodi včetně „Jakeova“ motoru se neoficiálně starají čínští civilisté, kterým Američané z pohodlnosti přenechali většinu vlastních povinností. Zapadnout do tohoto kolektivu není pro svérázného individualistu Jakea vůbec jednoduché. A bude to čím dál těžší, neboť Čínou začíná zmítat občanská válka. Na jedné straně všeho schopní komunisté, na druhé příznivci bezohledného nacionalisty Čankajška. Ani jedni si Američany na svém území nepřejí… (Česká televize)
