Film se odehrává ve 30. letech minulého století během Velké hospodářské krize. Ned (Robert De Niro) a Jim (Sean Penn) jsou dva zlodějíčci, kteří se dostanou na svobodu poté, co nečekaně uprchnou z vězení spolu s vrahem. Oba uprchlíci míří na sever ke kanadským hranicím, které plánují překročit převlečení za kněze. Naneštěstí v jednom pohraničním městě narazí na každoroční procesí. Aby nevzbudili podezření, nechají se tito sluhové Páně odvést do kláštera, kde čekají na svou příležitost. Oba se snaží zůstat v utajení, i když se Ned zamiluje do místí krasavice Molly (Demi Mooreová). (Cinemax)
